Prototype History

ALCO's beautiful PA-1 is one of America's most famous locomotives. It was ALCO's entry into the passenger train diesel craze, competing directly with the E-Units from EMD. They were built in Schenectady, New York, in the United States by a partnership of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and General Electric (GE) between June, 1946 and December, 1953. They were of a cab unit design, and both cab-equipped lead A unit (PA) and cabless booster B unit (PB) models were built.

Santa Fe took delivery of the first units, and A-B-A set resplendent in the red and silver Warbonnet Scheme, in September of 1946. They would go on to purchase 28 PA-1 units and 16 PB-1 units, more than any other railroad. They were used extensively all over the Santa Fe system to carry the railroad's varnish through the 1950s as well as lesser trains up through the early 1960s.
