EMD's FP7 variant of the popular and widely used F7 was born out of a need for a cab unit capable of being equipped with both dynamic brakes and a steam generator with sufficient water capacity to provide heating for a full passenger train on long, mountainous journeys. Similar at a glance to its bulldog-nosed cousins, the FP7 was an additional 4 feet long, grating extra space for large capacity water tanks. The Milwaukee road put FP7's along with F7B's, to good use pulling the Olympian Hiawatha through the Rocky Mountains where the terrain made E units less effective.
