Do you need this repair kit?
Anyone who has purchased locomotives from the initial production run of the SD60M Tri-Clops should request a repair kit. Unfortunately, the models were produced with an error in the tooling which can cause the locomotive to derail. In order to perform to Athearn standards, the model will need these repair parts. This repair kit was specifically designed to address the tooling error on the SD60M Tri-Clops units. It is NOT applicable, nor is it needed, for any other Athearn locomotives. We have included a link below with a list of the affected models.

What do the repair parts remedy?
The improved bottom gear cover was designed with longer pegs to better capture the truck sideframes. Without this part, the sideframes can pull away from the gear tower and cause the bearing caps to fall off. To repair the binding, derailing, and "warped trucks," it is necessary to add shims to the two sideframes. These sideframe shims were not included with the production units. When placed according to the instructions, these shims as well as the added security of the improved bottom gear cover, the SD60 Tri-Clops locomotives will perform as intended and match the engineered specifications; providing you with the experience and enjoyment for which Athearn is known.
